OpenStack Company Mirantis and Public Cloud Company UCloud Partner on OpenStack
OpenStack company Mirantis Inc. (Mirantis) and public cloud company UCloud have formed a partnership. The companies have established a joint venture called UMCloud that aims to “accelerate adoption” of OpenStack in China. Mirantis, which was established in 1999, has headquarters in Mountain View, California, USA, offers a wide range of OpenStack-based cloud computing services. UCloud, which has head offices in Shanghai, China, also offers a range of services including hosting and cloud services, databases and caching services alongside backup and disaster recovery solutions. Together the companies aim to make OpenStack “the leading open cloud infrastructure solution for finance, telecom, state-owned enterprises and large internet businesses in China”. Although a new company, UMCloud, which has headquarters in Shanghai, China, already has customers the caliber of the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. Its promise lies in leveraging Mirantis’ and UCloud’s strengths in the second-largest economy in the world and a growing cloud market. Mirantis has provided OpenStack solutions to some of the world’s largest companies including AT&T, Ericsson, Walmart, and Wells Fargo. UCloud is China’s largest “independent public cloud service provider”. It maintains data centers in China, Hong Kong and the United States and supports the global operations of a number of key Chinese companies. It recently raised $100 million Series C financing, bringing investment in the company to $160 million to date. "China and the United States are two countries where cloud computing is developing the fastest, spawning global brands and fostering enormous innovations in technology and business models," explained Mirantis co-founder and President Alex Freedland. "UMCloud fully supports and embraces the Internet Plus initiative national policy and we see unlimited potential in OpenStack as a major cloud engine helping power future economic growth in China."
