Netflix Utilizes Amazon Web Services Cloud for “Artificial Brain”

February 14, 2014
by Staff Writer

American on-demand Internet streaming media provider Netflix is utilizing Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) cloud options to develop an “artificial brain” that will recommend which movies its customers should watch. Rather than creating its own infrastructure to run its deep learning algorithms, the company has chosen Amazon’s cloud service to accommodate its new system.

The company has suggested that its work is in an “experimental” phase, but the move is the culmination of a number of efforts which have included the “Netflix Prize” – a challenge to global data scientists to establish algorithms that would determine which movies and television programs a person would like to see. The company is now extending these efforts to integrate artificial intelligence-based “deep learning” that leverages computing power to behave in a similar fashion to the human brain.

Deep learning solutions leverage “neural networks” which provide computer simulations of neurons in the brain. Currently the largest neural networks have enough processing power to simulate on 1% of the human brain, but can detect photos and establish your areas of interest based on your behaviours. The company has employed a number of deep-learning researchers to intensify its efforts.

The cloud has given smaller companies the processing power they need to take on the big boys. How will trends like ‘big data’ and ‘deep learning’ change things? Add your comments below.
