Multinational Technology and Consulting Corporation IBM Unveils New Smarter Cities Software Capabilities

Multinational technology and consulting corporation IBM has unveiled a number of additional capabilities of its Smarter Cities software. The software delivers cloud-based analytics that enable administrators and governments to better understand how to cater for the people they serve.

With growing populations and aging infrastructure, managing cities on reduced budgets has become a significant challenge. IBM’s cloud computing standards-based portfolio of “Intelligent Operations” software leverages IBM’s SmartCloud and provides “predictive analytics” designed to help make cities better. A number of city leaders collaborated with IBM on the design of the software.

IBM’s solution also provides reductions in capital and technology installation costs, allowing administrators to pay for services on a “pay-as-you-go” basis. Being cloud-based it does not require specialized hardware and can be setup quickly to establish scalable integrated software-as-a-service options. The solution has been utilized by Waterfront Toronto, a major waterfront revitalization project. Waterfront Toronto uses IBM’s Intelligent Operations Center on an “as-a-service” basis to integrate a range of data sources and create “real-time visualizations” that provide insights into the data provided.

“Waterfront Toronto is creating an intelligent community that uses technology to enhance quality of life and economic opportunity,” explained Waterfront Toronto’s CEO, John Campbell. “Together with partners like IBM and Element Blue, we are delivering future-ready infrastructure that will allow people and businesses to thrive and deliver a competitive advantage for the City of Toronto on the global stage.”
