by Staff Writer

The White House recently announced that D J Patil has been appointed to the position of the United States’ first Chief Data Scientist. The position requires Mr. Patil to help the United States government establish policies designed to ensure the USA maintains its position as an innovative global technology leader.

Mr. Patil’s full title is “U.S. Chief Data Scientist at White House Office of Science and Technology Policy”. He will be responsible for establishing relationships that will ensure the USA’s investment in areas related to data reap the greatest possible reward. To do this Mr. Patil will also be responsible for persuading leading players in the data science arena to work in US public service. He will also take part in the Precision Medicine Initiative aimed at using big data to establish tools that “personalize” medical treatments.

Prior to taking his new position, Mr. Patil was Vice President of Product at RelateIQ – a software company which was purchased by global cloud CRM giant Salesforce. He is a graduate of University of Maryland College Park. On February 20, 2015 the White House Blog released a message to the people to the United States written by Mr. Patil. Entitled, “What Is Data Science, and Why Does It Matter?” Mr.Patel wrote:

“The data age has arrived. From crowd-sourced product reviews to real-time traffic alerts, “big data” has become a regular part of our daily lives. In 2013, researchers estimated that there were about 4 zettabytes of data worldwide: That’s approximately the total volume of information that would be created if every person in the United States took a digital photo every second of every day for over four months! The vast majority of existing data has been generated in the past few years, and today’s explosive pace of data growth is set to continue. In this setting, data science -- the ability to extract knowledge and insights from large and complex data sets -- is fundamentally important.”
