CenturyLink Inc. Business Data Center Subsidiary Savvis to Build 100,000-Square-Foot Data Center in Shakopee
CenturyLink Inc.’s business data center subsidiary Savvis is to build a 100,000-square-foot cloud computing data center in Shakopee, Minnesota, USA on a 10-acre plot. The company suggested that the new data center would be online “next spring”, but hasn’t confirmed how many people it will employ. St. Louis-based Savvis was bought by CenturyLink in 2011 and the two companies have around 2,200 employees in the “Twin Cities”. Only 13 percent of Savvis’ new center’s total floor space will be initially come on line, and no indication has been given of when the center will be fully operational. Savvis’ move is directed towards customers who want cloud solutions but also need to know where their data will be located. Such customers include health care organizations bound by government regulations regarding knowing where medical records are being stored. Savvis’ corporate customers will house their IT operations, including their software and data, either in part or fully through the company’s cloud computing options. Shakopee’s corporate customers will keep some of their IT capability onsite while also using Savvis’ cloud solutions. “Increasingly more customers request a local data center presence and this site is helping to meet those needs,” explained CenturyLink’s Minneapolis-based Midwest president, Duane Ring.
