Broadband and Telecommunications Company Verizon and Computer Technology Corporation Oracle Partner in the Cloud
Broadband and telecommunications company Verizon and computer technology corporation Oracle have partnered on cloud-related activity. The deal will enable Verizon's customers to utilize Oracle databases and software solutions on a "per-hour' basis rather than having to sign up for extended usage. It also means moving from "on-premises" Oracle to cloud-based Oracle solutions will be considerably easier. Verizon's new cloud option is currently in beta but the corporation is allowing customers to sign up. General availability is slated for later this year. The move enables Verizon to compete with key industry players such as Amazon Web Services (AWS). It also means that users whose data centers utilize Oracle can now utilize Verizon's new cloud services to meet a variety of needs, including testing, development, and disaster recovery. Users will also be able to utilize Verizon’s cloud to run production applications on Oracle hardware. Although an important partnership, similar arrangements have been made through a range of partnerships, including the AWS Marketplace. However, this partnership means standard and enterprise Oracle Database and Oracle Fusion Middleware will be made to Verizon users. Many analysts suggest this arrangement will enable Verizon's public IaaS offerings to compete more successfully with AWS offerings. Last year Verizon jettisoned its Terremark-acquired infrastructure and upgraded its IaaS cloud compute and storage options in a bid to compete with AWS. Can Verizon compete with AWS?
